“Love makes the world go round.”
1961 Broadway musical, Carnival
“Love is all you need.”
The Beatles (who ironically had quite a bit of difficulty loving one another)
Without love, I am nothing. (The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:1-3)
Now abide faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love. (Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:13)
So, what is LOVE?
Love is an emotion, but more than an emotion.
Love is action, but a certain kind of action.
Love is acting toward others in ways that are good, beautiful, and true.
Love is acting in ways that do not harm but do offer much help.
Love is acting in ways that do not take wrongly from others, but which give greatly to others.
Love is when you do good to others. It is when you “do graciousness” to others. It is when you do gentle, truthful, kind, patient, right, well, generous . . . and then you do it all over again tomorrow.
Love is when you do this without conditions, without payback, without expectations, and without hidden agendas.
Love is what you do because love is what must be done. Love is what you do because love is what Jesus does.
I find myself borrowing a prayer from a distraught father in the Gospels (Mark 9:23-24): “Lord, I believe, help my unbelief,” and giving it a slight rewrite.
“Lord, I love but not nearly well enough. Help me to love much more. Help me to love like you love.”
May we pray this prayer many times in the days ahead.
Having the ability to empower and resource leaders to bear much fruit that lasts. Being a part of a team of friends and missional servants committed to changing the world.
