I recently read a very good book on the leadership of Dwight Eisenhower, the American general in charge of all allied forces for the D-Day invasion and eventual defeat of Nazi Germany. Here is one of Ike’s quotes from the most massive military operation ever planned:
“Plans are nothing. Planning is everything.”
Think of it this way. Life is in constant change. Everything around you is in flux. You are in process and hopefully the process is that of progress. Life happens. Stuff happens. Unexpected stuff happens. Curve balls come your way. The unforeseen and the unfortunate are in your future. Therefore, constant adjustment, adaptation, course correction, and improvisation are necessary for life. Life is exciting, precious, beautiful, changing, and sometimes unpredictable. Chaos theory has some application in every life. So does Murphy’s Law.*
So yes, make prayerful plans and yes, keep on planning.
Be proactive and be responsive.
Seize the day and hold it loosely.
Set motivational goals and be flexible and ready to adapt as you need.
Be sure to read Proverbs 16:1-3 for God’s word about plans.
*”If anything can go wrong, it will.“
Having the ability to empower and resource leaders to bear much fruit that lasts. Being a part of a team of friends and missional servants committed to changing the world.
