Welcome to “The Flourishing Project”

I have been thinking about this for a long time.HumanFlourishing_small

Flourishing. Thriving. Abundance. Life. Love. Laughter. Family. Friends. Meaning. Purpose. Health. Beauty. Goodness. Truth. Virtue.

And Jesus! I have been thinking about Jesus a lot!

“In him was life and that life was the light of men.” (John 1:4)

“I came so they may have real and eternal, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.” (John 10:10, The Message)

It came together when I prayed for a new, concise, compelling, and worthy Life Mission. What was my life to be all about? Why was I here on earth? What was I to do? What would cause me to jump out of bed every morning? [Okay, I am a morning person, maybe you just crawl out of bed, but I wanted to jump!]

It didn’t come in just a moment. But once the idea hit, it quickly evolved.

“Helping the People I Love Thrive”

That’s it. That is why I am here. That is what I want to do. That is what will make life full and satisfying for me.

I am here to serve, help, give, support, empower, and provide whatever resources I can.

Because it is a pretty big job to love everyone, everywhere, all the time, I have to be a little more selective. There are certain groups of people that are special to me. My family. My friends (local and at a distance). My colleagues (who also happen to be my friends). The congregation of Living Word. The community of York. And certain groups of people around the world. That’s a start.

To thrive (or flourish) is to experience a quality of life that Jesus has for people: Real, abundant, eternal, more, better, richer, deeper …

When I knew God was calling me to be the next Lead Pastor at Living Word, one of the things that made this attractive to me was that it would give me the opportunity to help you flourish. Even last summer, I knew I wanted to create a model and approach we could use to move fully into the life Christ has for us.When we came up with The Best is Yet to Come theme for our capital campaign and building project, I was even more motivated to help the people I love thrive. I began working on it, sitting with it, pondering and arguing with it, and deleting-adding-changing it.

And on Easter weekend, we are launching it.

50 Days of focused attention on John 10:10.
50 Days of focused attention on the Presence, Work, and Word of Jesus.
50 Days of focused attention on the Plans God has for us.

Those 50 days include: (1) Get Real, seven Sunday sermons on the core themes of flourishing, (2) daily devotional exercises that will help you dive into the Bible so God’s Word can transform your life, and (3) daily posts that will give you the best practices and big ideas you need so you can thrive.

Many small groups are also using The Flourishing Project/Get Real Series as a time to go even deeper with more study and sharing.

The more you engage with The Flourishing Project, the more you will learn, the more you will grow, and the more you will experience Jesus at work in your life.

No matter what your starting point is, 50 days of focused attention will make a difference in your life.

Jesus lived, taught, loved, died, rose from the dead, ascended on high, and sent the Holy Spirit so you will THRIVE. That is my prayer for you every day.

I hope you are ready. I know I am!
Happy Easter!
And to God be the glory, forever and ever.
