Do you know what is the longest chapter in the Bible? Your answer is: (______________). I’ll come back with the answer in a few moments.
Here is my proposal, my thesis, my challenge, my invitation. You will FLOURISH when you know God, when you know his plans, his purposes, his will, his way, and know all of this through Knowing the Word of God. Not just as an intellectual or academic exercise. But knowing the Bible with your heart, soul, mind and strength.
And then loving, honoring, listening to, trusting, obeying, putting into practice the life giving words of God.
Read Psalm 1:1-3. When you meditate on the word of God, you will be like a tree planted by streams of water with much fruit – you will prosper.
Read James 1:21-25. When you do more than just listen to God’s Word, when you receive it planted within you – find freedom and blessing. That sounds a lot like flourishing to me.
Read John 8:31-32. You shall know the truth, and that truth will set you free.
Read 2 Timothy 3:14-17. The Bible makes you “wise for salvation” and so much more.
I could multiple this list of verses where we see the power of the Bible to transform our thinking and empower us for good and true living.
Back to my question: What is the longest chapter in the Bible? If you said Psalm 119, you were right. The Psalm is 176 verses of praise and reverence for God’s Word and for the transformative impact it has on the reader. You will see how the Psalmist flourishes because of the power and beauty of God’s True Word. If you want a good text for devotional readings all week long – use this one.
The Bible has changed my life. I can’t imagine a life without daily immersion and inspiration and illumination from the Scripture. Well, actually I can imagine such a life, for I see it every day – all around me. I just can’t imagine it for myself.
So . . . I went back to make a list of all the Scriptures you have read, considered, studied, listened to, sought to implement, since the Get Real Series began. It is an IMPRESSIVE list. There was no one day that would impress you. There is no one week that would hit you the way this list does. But when you look at the Seven Week Flourishing Project – it is remarkable what some (many) of you have engaged. If you are feeling some flourishing – you can certainly point to the power of God’s Word to save, heal, renew, and transform you.
And I want to “cast a little vision” for you. No single day will make or break your journey. Nor a single week. And not even a single month. Flourishing is the long, slow, deep, steady, hard, and always particular to you way of living as a follower of Jesus. As the weeks go by, as the scriptural wisdom accumulates, as your prayer life ripens and matures – Flourishing will Flourish!
