Reaching Lost People


Lost people matter to God and they matter to us! All around York County are people who are far from God. Their lives are messy and broken. They have no idea where to turn for help. For decades, God has blessed and used Living Word to reach lost people. We’ve all heard stories of radically changed lives through the grace of Jesus, but we can’t rest on our past. We exist for those who are not yet a part of us, and we must continue to reach out. We must do all we can to reach our community. We are committed to doing what is needed to reach 1,000 adults with the gospel in the next 5 years.



Our building capacity is inadequate in so many ways and limits our ability to effectively share the good news of Christ with the new people we want to reach.


Whenever we have increased our capacity, God has brought more people into our church family. More people knowing Jesus; more broken lives being restored; more families strengthened; and much more love, grace, and hope!

THE NEXT Generation


The new adults attending will bring their kids and teens with them. This next generation uses the parts of our building that are already stretched and, at times, maxed out. One hundred thousand kids live in York County and they need Jesus in their lives! Kids are much more open to Christ than adults. As the culture around us becomes increasingly non-Christian and anti-Christian, we have a great opportunity and responsibility to help the Next Generation be rooted and grounded in the ways of Christ—studying the Bible, encountering Jesus, connecting in small groups, and growing in their own commitment to Christ.




Our kid:life area is presently filled to capacity. If we even grow by 300 adults, we don’t have the classroom space to handle the additional 100 kids that would attend with these adults. The student:life area is already completely full on Sunday mornings. We lack spaces for the small group ministries of Pulse and Transit (middle school ministry).


With the building expansion we gain two additional large rooms for our kid:life ministry and larger space for student:life, as well as essential break-out rooms for small groups.



While we give a strategic priority to the Next Generation, we are fully committed to every generation at Living Word. We celebrate being a multigenerational church and recognize that each stage of life brings its own challenges and opportunities for ministry. Mid-size communities are foundational to our church life and growth.


With our current attendance, we regularly run out of space for adult classes and events. Our building is bustling with activity during the week. As we grow in Sunday attendance, there is the increasing need to provide more classes throughout the week for all who want to benefit from adult formation and learning.


To meet this need, our project adds two large classrooms for Sunday through Thursday mid-size communities and classes.





Visibility and accessibility are key components for new people when they search for a church. Pastor Steve has often said that we are one of the best kept secrets in York. Thousands of people travel Cape Horn Road and have no idea our church is here. People come looking for our church and can’t find it. We cannot be seen from the road.


When people drive past Living Word on Cape Horn Road they can’t see the church and are not aware that we are here.


There are some simple, inexpensive, and beautiful ways to make our building visible from the road now that the hill in front of the building has been lowered. Additionally, the entrance road will be redesigned to be much more inviting. Greater visibility will provide an increased awareness of our church. This will create more opportunities to welcome lost and searching people into our church family.

Space for PRAYER


Prayer is foundational to our church and our lives, yet we have no dedicated space for prayer. The health and strength of our church depends upon us coming into the presence of God through prayer and worship. Living Word will be a gathering place for prayer. Our church has also developed the heart and faith for Sacred Spaces.


Living Word has never had a designated room for prayer. We also have been extremely limited in offering Sacred Space experiences due to not having a designated space for prayer and meeting with God.


Think of the answered prayers and encounters with God that we will experience with a dedicated Sacred Space for prayer and devotion.

Space for STAFF


We have an awesome staff that oversees most of our ministries. As we grow and move into the future we will be strategically hiring more staff.


Our offices are inadequate and scattered, putting limits on the way our staff can effectively work together. We have run out of office space and have nowhere to put our next hire.


This project will help us get a good start on creating the area we need for our staff team to be in proximity to each other and to do the ministry they are called to do.



We understand the power of Christian Community. It is one of the main glues that holds us together in our journey. It is often the determining factor of whether a person leaves or remains in a church. We believe the world is yearning for authentic community where people can be graciously known, loved, and supported. One of our great hallmarks is that we are a grace-filled community. We need to have a place of worship that easily invites people into community.


Our present lobby is more of a glorified hallway than a functional lobby. It’s congested, cold, and confusing.


Imagine the relational connections and community that will take place as we double this space to accommodate seating arrangements, adequate sign-up areas, and a Welcome Center that is visible and accessible to everyone. Add a second coffee bar on the kid:life end for people bringing children, and we have increased our opportunities for community.
