Psalm 150:1-2 NIV
Question
How can you praise God today?
Psalm 150
Praise as a Way of Life
Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord!
Praise the Lord! (v.6)
Psalm 150 is the last psalm in the book of Psalms. What a way to end this prayer book, on a high note of praising God. To praise God! Do we know what it means to praise God? To adore God? To glorify God?
In this day and age, we so easily adore our celebrities, wanting to get a selfie with them. We shout praise for our sports teams in the sanctuary of their stadiums. Praise has been cheapened. Why is praising God so important? Just as exercise and proper diet are
foundational for healthy bodies, so praise is foundational for meaningful and healthy spiritual life.
When we praise God, our eyes are opened to see the world in new ways. Our senses become more heightened to God and all of life. In times of pain and suffering, praise refuses to let pain have the final say. It doesn’t deny the pain, but when we praise God,
we state our desire to affirm life in the midst of the pain. We say yes to life. Praise of God is ultimately a habit or discipline of the Christian life. By it we say yes to what we know about God. But do we really have the language to praise God?
Many of the Psalms give us the proper language for praising God. One writer on the Psalms puts it this way, “Praising God in the words of the Psalms, we can come to know Him better. Knowing Him better we love Him better, loving Him better we find our happiness in Him.” (Thomas Merton, Praying the Psalms)
C.S. Lewis says: “I think we delight to praise what we enjoy…”
Do you enjoy God? Do you find it difficult to praise God? Maybe it’s because you don’t truly enjoy God. Ask yourself these questions: Is God my first love? Does my heart burn for God?
