Scripture

Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

Psalm 62:2 NIV
Question

How does your soul need rest today?

Psalm 62
Focus

Psalm 62 is about focus, which has huge implications for our lives. Let’s compare and contrast a few key verses:
Psalm 62:1-2
Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. … he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.
Psalm 62:5-7
Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.
… he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

Notice how David switches from having a statement of faith to instructing his soul as he talks about salvation and hope and the difference between never being shaken (belief) and not being shaken (resolve).

As the psalm progresses, he encourages us to trust God always, pour our hearts out to him, and remain teachable in challenging times. Written when David’s personal and professional life were completely falling apart (see 2 Samuel chapters 13-16 for details), this is how he got through the mess:
• Making a statement of faith
• Instructing his soul to believe what he says he believes
• Recognizing his identity comes from God alone
Also, notice how he switches from personal “my” language to inclusive “our” language, encouraging those he leads with where to go in times of hurt, pain, anguish, disappointment, chaos, confusion, etc.

Psalm 62 is often referred to as the only psalm. Not because it was literally the only psalm (clearly there are 149 others), but because it points so vividly to our need for God. Focus.
Take a moment to think about your own life:
• Do you have a statement of faith?
• Will you instruct your soul to trust in God in hard times?
• Will you pour out your heart to God?
• Will you remain teachable no matter what?

Prayer

Lord, as I pour out my heart to you, please help me believe that you, and you alone, have the ability to be my rock, salvation, fortress, refuge, honor, rest, and hope for the future. Today and always.
